Thomas Edison famously said, “Genius is one per cent inspiration, ninety-nine per cent perspiration.” The process of creation is never easy, and perspiration definitely figures prominently in Lamitak’s journey of creating each laminate collection. Travelling provides the inspiration – specifically and most recently, 30 days in the US and 220 hours on a road trip along the West coast of America, exploring Oregon, Nevada, California and Arizona, for their current laminate collection.
The majestic locations visited on this arduous search for inspiration includes well-known sights such as Antelope Canyon with its sweeping wave-like sandstone structures carved out by water, the awe-inspiring Grand Canyon, and Yosemite National Park with its vast rugged landscapes of giant Sequoia trees and granite cliffs.
It’s hard not to be inspired by the immense beauty of Yosemite Natural Park.
But it wasn’t just postcard-perfect locations the Lamitak team sought out for inspiration. “We also wanted to meet the people who process the materials, for example, wood. We wanted to learn their craft and observe how they handle and transform the raw material. From there, we are able to get ideas for textures and designs,” explains Jansen Tan, director of product and brand at Lamitak.
It wasn’t enough to just be inspired by nature, the Lamitak team also studied the processes that shape raw materials such as wood.
Lamitak’s search for inspiration also brought them to leather tanneries, wood mills and textile factories. It brought them to the people with the knowledge and wisdom of shaping and crafting the materials. The team then records the stories of these craftsmen, and along with their own visual stimulus of inspiring designs and textures, creates laminates that tell stories of inspiration and creation as well.
