Travel has always been a wellspring of inspiration for designers, even laminate designers. Wherever the Lamitak team goes, we always keep our eyes open for visually arresting textures; but it is not often we can pinpoint the final design to a single location. However, in the case of the rugged wood-inspired Rialto Pine laminate, it was two locations, halfway around the world from each other, which motivated its design. We share the story of its creation.

The dominant inspiration for Rialto Pine lies literally in the canals of Venice. The mooring posts of European oak, also known as briccole, is as much an icon of the city of love as the gondolas which ply its famed waterways. Exposed to the elements, the posts’ weather-beaten texture forms the basis of Rialto Pine’s unique design of deep grooves, splits, stains and knots.

Now the scene shifts to Mount Hood in Oregon, USA, where the team went on a momentous road trip to gather inspiration. “In the hot and dry environment of this area, wood is parched till it becomes whitish. We noticed these planks which were wonderfully grainy and stood out for its strong, weathered textures,” says Jansen Tan, director of product and brand at Lamitak. He adds, “The Rialto Pine laminate is a composite of ideas from these two locations.”
